Who writes this, where the numbers come from, how often they are checked, and how the site makes money.
What Tregie is
Tregie compares what it actually costs to buy property and move to southern Europe. We cover four countries in depth, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus, rather than twenty at surface level. Each country page carries 22 sourced figures, and every one of them shows where it came from and the month it was last checked.
We are not a portal and we do not list properties. There is nothing to search here and nothing to bid on. The point of the site is the part of a purchase that portals leave out: the transfer tax you did not budget for, the wealth tax that starts at EUR 700,000, the residence permit that stopped existing in April 2025, the letting rule that voids that permit if you ignore it.
Who writes it
Jamey Weber, editor and researcher. Jamey Weber builds and maintains Tregie. He collects the figures on this site from primary sources, the national statistics offices, land registries, tax authorities and the published legislation itself, records the source and the date next to every number, and rechecks them on a fixed schedule. He is not a broker, tax adviser or lawyer, and nothing on Tregie is personal advice. Where a rule is contested or a bill has not passed, the page says so rather than rounding it into a clean answer.
That last point is worth repeating plainly. Tregie is a research publication. It is not a broker, an estate agency, a tax adviser or a law firm, and nothing on it is personal financial, tax or legal advice. Before you buy anything, take advice from a professional who is regulated in the country you are buying in and who is working for you rather than for the seller.
How the figures are gathered
Every hard number lives in a typed record with its source, a link to that source where one exists, and the month it was checked. We prefer primary sources: the legislation itself, the national statistics office, the land registry, the tax authority, the central bank. Where only a market source exists, such as an asking-price index, the record says so.
Where a rule is contested or a bill has been announced but not passed, the page says that instead of picking a side. Spain's proposed 100 percent tax on non-EU buyers is the clearest current example: it was announced in January 2025, submitted as a bill in May 2025, had not been debated by March 2026, and is not law. Plenty of sites report it as though it were.

How often it is checked
Every country record is reviewed in full at least twice a year, and the volatile fields, residency thresholds, transfer tax rates and short-term letting rules, are checked whenever we become aware of a change. The date next to each figure is the month that figure was last verified, not the date the page was rebuilt. If a number has not been rechecked, the date does not move.
How Tregie makes money
This is the part most comparison sites bury, so here it is in full. Tregie earns a referral fee. If you use the introduction form, we pass your details to an independent buying agent or adviser in the country you selected, and if that introduction leads to a completed purchase, that professional pays us a share of their commission. You pay nothing, and the fee does not increase what you pay for the property.
The obvious risk in that arrangement is that it tempts a site to steer readers toward whichever country pays best. Three things guard against it. The country records are written and sourced independently of any commercial relationship and are not edited to suit a partner. The comparison pages name a winner per category and in the closing section, including where the answer is the country with no partner attached. And we have no partner under contract in any of the four countries at the time of writing, so nothing on this site has been shaded by one yet.
There is no advertising on Tregie, no sponsored placement, and no affiliate link anywhere on the site. If that changes, this page changes first.
